Around President’s Day this year I read an article by Jill Lepore mentioning a discussion of how to address George Washington as the leader of a new country.
Love this. Obviously I love words! Even, or especially from other cultures. Are you familiar with "Word History" on the online Merriam-Webster? It says "Middle English, from Anglo-French, from Latin praesident-, praesidens, from present participle of praesidēre." I like the "sit" as in "sit down, you're rocking the boat..." :-(
Also káiser.
For some reason, I was always intrigued that Tsar is a form of Caesar.
Heck, I should have included TSAR!
Thank you so much Allison. Give me your address and I'll send you a special bookmark.
